about me
I'm Phan Thi Phuong Anh, 22 years old this year. I have been in the tattoo industry for 4 years, of which 1 year as an apprentice. Talking about the way to become a tattoo artist is quite long for me. It took me 1 year to learn the most basic things: what is tattooing and how to hold the camera, differentiating between machines, needles, ... then I opened my own shop and took some advanced courses to improve my skills for 3 years. I am currently a tattoo artist at Another Tattoo Xuan Dieu. However, I'm still in the process of learning and finding my own style and color. It's a bit funny why I chose to become a tattoo artist. I studied for the entrance exam to a fine arts school, the most competitive major. I was determined to get in, but that year I failed. It was really sad and disappointing, so I dropped out of university and applied to Tats Studio (also Another Tattoo now). Fortunately, my parents supported me so much that I got here.
my work
For my works, I use the simplified features and combine with the blotchy colors and my inspiration when using color is the paintings Van Gogh. My work mostly centered around Vietnamese themes such as girls wearing ao dai, conical hats, pipe tobacco, bicycles, four-body shirts, cub cars, members of the ethnic minorities,... Since most of my clients are foreigners, I want to convey something about the culture and identity of the country I was born into in my tattoo — as a way to spread the tradition of Vietnam to people all over the world.
my journey
As a woman in the tattoo industry, I feel a bit special, I feel respected by my peers, and now I'm happy to see that there is a rising number in female tattoo artists. They are all very good, and have a distinct style. I think it doesn't matter whether the tattoo artist is male or female, as long as they have the skills, a unique style and respect the profession.
on the concept on tattos
I agree with the point that the tattoo helps me to be more confident, and helps show my courage. I always have the mindset that this is my body, and I only have one life so why not do the things I like, of course when I have enough thought and maturity to be responsible for those decisions. I don't care what others think when looking at a tattooed girl like me, as long as I'm comfortable with myself. I apply the similar philosophy to my clients. I always try to bring them the most perfect designs and tattoos that would fit their aesthetic and that match their personality so that they can confidently show off the tattoos on their bodies.
